The field speaks: the rut
In September and October, deer and fallow deer are in heat, and they begin to emit hoarse bellows as a sexual call.
This spectacle is known as the rutting season, when the deer's mating season fills the countryside with a wild and magical sound. The countryside is transformed and moves those who have the chance to witness it.
In this way, male specimens warn potential competitors of where their territory is and, by the power of their voice, make them notice their size and determination. For example, this is how the deer protects its harem, which is made up of females of different ages and which it closely monitors to check when they come into heat.
Spain is full of places where you can witness this intimate and fascinating moment, both for hunters and for any nature lover.
For the former, it is an exciting modality with all the virtues of any other stalking, plus the impressive echoes of the deer bellowing in the mountain valleys. Another option apart from the approach is to wait, especially if hunting in the afternoon. In the central hours of the day, the deer's activity disappears and becomes active again at dusk.
In the case of the latter, nature lovers, photography enthusiasts or simply curious people demand more and more each year to be able to come closer to listen to these powerful mountain voices and, in the process, observe the animal that emits them.
Rural dwellers, increasingly distant from the countryside, like to get closer to nature in their free time, and the rutting season is a great way to do so, which can also leave benefits in the areas visited for this purpose.
