Synopsis of Marcial: Memoirs of an Untamed Hunter

Marcial: Memoirs of an Untamed Hunter is the twentieth hunting-themed book by Marcial Gómez Sequeira. In it, he recounts his international hunting memories, expeditions that have served as the foundation for assembling what is possibly one of the finest hunting trophy collections in the world.

The book opens with a moving portrait of the author, written ten years ago by the late Antonio Mata Huete (RIP)—a text that remains fully relevant today. This is followed by a prologue by Gómez Sequeira himself, titled Rebirth, and an introduction by Adolfo Sanz Rueda, Memoirs of a Hunter.

The heart of the book is formed by the author’s own memoirs, divided into seven stages of his hunting life:

  • Initial Stage (1970–1982)

  • Consolidation Stage (1983–1986)

  • Frenetic Activity (1987–1991)

  • The Crusades (1992–2000)

  • Recess (2001–2009)

  • Back in Action (2010–2015)

  • The Legacy (2016–Present)

Within each stage, the author recounts his hunts one by one, dwelling especially on the seventh stage, The Legacy, in which his greatest motivation for continuing to hunt is to pass on his vast hunting heritage to his grandson Martín.

Each stage is preceded by an introductory foreword written by a friend of Marcial Gómez Sequeira, further enhancing the work thanks to the distinguished level of its contributors. The authors of these forewords are: Carmen Basarán Conde, Agustín Palomino Valencia, Antonio Sainero Martín, Eduardo Romero Nieto, Jesús Caballero Martínez, José María Losa Reverté, and José García Escorial.

The book concludes with a brief reference to hunting in Spain, including the remarkable number of medal-winning trophies obtained by the author in the country, as well as the story he wrote immediately after taking a magnificent Spanish ibex in Las Batuecas on May 1, 1990.
